Universal Studios has officially announced one of the most ambitious and exciting expansions in its storied history: the creation of its sixth global location, to be built in Bedford, England. The massive multi-billion-pound resort, projected to open around 2031, marks Universal’s first foray into the United Kingdom—and it's sending shockwaves through the global entertainment and tourism industries. Simply put, “when you're hot, you're hot!”, and Universal Studios & Resorts is blazing.
This landmark announcement is the latest in a remarkable 35-year streak of growth for Universal's theme park division. It all started with the groundbreaking Universal Studios Florida in 1990, which was followed by Islands of Adventure in 1999. The momentum continued overseas with Universal Studios Japan (2001), Universal Studios Singapore (2011), and most recently, the breathtaking Universal Beijing Resort, which opened in 2020. The upcoming opening of Epic Universe in Orlando on May 22, 2025, adds even more fuel to the fire—demonstrating Comcast/Universal’s commitment to global entertainment dominance. And now, with the Bedford Park on the horizon, that momentum shows no signs of slowing.

The decision to build in Bedford is both strategic and visionary. The UK has long been hungry for a world-class theme park experience driven by a major global operator, and for over 45 years, there has been speculation and hope that one would finally make the leap. I remember vividly, as Vice President of International Theme Park Development for the Taft Broadcasting Company back in the early 1980s, studying this very region—between Bedford and Milton Keynes—for a British firm eager to bring such a vision to life. At the time, the market was not ready. But now, the stars have aligned, and the market is ripe, the economic climate is favorable, and Universal is more than ready.

Universal’s proposed resort in Bedford is not just about rides and rollercoasters—it is a complete transformation of the region’s economic and cultural landscape. Early estimates suggest it could inject as much as £50 billion into the UK economy, while directly and indirectly creating more than 28,000 jobs. This aligns closely with the UK government’s broader ambitions to promote high-value tourism, create better jobs, invest in advanced technology, and build a stronger hospitality sector.
The sheer scale of this project is difficult to overstate. It will be one of the largest and most technologically advanced entertainment resorts in Europe, rivaling—and possibly surpassing—global icons like Disneyland Paris. Universal’s ambition goes well beyond thrilling attractions. They are building an entire universe of immersive experiences, advanced entertainment tech, themed hotels, retail, dining, and more.

And here is where it gets even more exciting. Having recently had the rare opportunity to take a private tour of Epic Universe, the newest Universal Park, Orlando, I can confidently say that the level of ride innovation, interactivity, and storytelling on display there is already lightyears ahead of what most theme parks offer today. By the time the Bedford resort opens in 2031, we can only imagine how far ride technology will have come. We are talking about potential experiences that blur the line between physical and virtual, real and fantastical experiences that might be hard to even fathom today.

Universal's expansion into the UK isn’t just a business move—it is a cultural milestone. The UK is one of the world’s most passionate entertainment markets, with a rich history in storytelling, film, and music. A Universal theme park in Bedford will tap directly into that legacy, potentially introducing British-themed attractions, drawing on beloved IPs, and giving local audiences—and international visitors—something extraordinary to look forward to.
Let us not forget the location advantage either. Bedford sits within reach of major transport hubs and is less than an hour from London, making it an easy destination for domestic and international tourists alike. With infrastructure developments already being considered to support the influx of visitors, the park will also serve as a long-term catalyst for regional development.

In sum, this is more than just a theme park. It is the beginning of a new era for British tourism, European entertainment, and Universal’s global expansion ambitions. Bedford will soon be home to a destination that welcomes millions of guests from around the world, generates billions in economic impact, and showcases the very best in cutting-edge entertainment. And if Universal’s past is any indication, this won’t just be a park—it will be a legend.
WHEN YOU’RE HOT YOU’RE HOT, and Universal Studios & Resorts is scorching!
