Madame Tussauds to open in Berlin, July 2008

Merlin Entertainments Group, the European-based, leading name in family entertainment, and largest visitor attraction operator in Germany, is set to open a Madame Tussauds attraction in Berlin in July 2008.

Madame Tussauds Berlin, which will open in the city’s prestigious Unter den Linden Boulevard, will be the eighth to open around the world, and Madame Tussauds’ third European venture. It will be the third Merlin Entertainments Group attraction in Berlin, joining the very successful SEA LIFE, opened in 2003 and the world’s first LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, opened 2007.

As with its sister attractions, Madame Tussauds Berlin will be a fully immersive unique visitor experience, using state of the art technology, clever interactives and dramatic backdrops to showcase a range of incredibly lifelike wax figures from international Hollywood ‘A’ listers, through sports stars , historic figures and icons of contemporary culture.

Madame Tussauds Berlin will also closely reflect local culture and include leading German public figures from tennis ace Boris Becker to popstar Herbert Groenemeyer and German Chancellor Angela Merkel appearing in nine exciting zones. All figures will appear in emotive settings ranging from the historical including a claustrophobic war bunker and representation of the Berlin Wall to the contemporary, via a high tech TV Studio and fully interative music sound zone

The attraction will also be true to its 200 year old roots and visitors will be able to learn about Marie Tussaud who famously began sculpting during the French Revolution using the gruesome method of taking the decapitated heads of prominent citizens as her models. Today, happily, decapitated heads are no longer required but the extraordinary artistry remains otherwise much the same and visitors will be given a behind the scenes peak at the process from the celebrity ‘sittings’ where over 500 body measurements are taken, through to the insertion of individual strands of real hair and precise matching of eye colour shades.

Full details of the interactive experiences and figures to be unveiled in the 2500 sq m attraction at opening, remain tightly under wraps. Post-opening the attraction intends to constantly refresh the offer to ensure it remains contemporary and encourage repeat visits.

Madame Tussauds Berlin is expected to be popular with both domestic and overseas visitors. In Germany, the Madame Tussauds brand name enjoys huge awareness (92%) and Germans are currently the biggest single group of overseas visitors to its London attraction. The experience is expected to appeal to a wide variety of people from culture vultures seeking a ‘potted’ experience of Berlin, to celebrity followers, family fun seekers and schoolchildren.
