Shanghai applies to build its own Disneyland: mayor BEIJING (Reuters) - Shanghai has applied to the Chinese central government to build its own Disneyland, Mayor Han Zheng said on Thursday, ending long-standing speculation on whether it would opt for such a park. Plans for a Shanghai Disneyland emerged in 2005 but were suspended when the city's Communist Party boss, Chen Liangyu, was implicated in a corruption investigation in 2006.

Six Flags Could Dust Itself Off in Dubai  Just when you thought that Dubai had brokered way too many deals to import stateside amusement park concepts into the United Arab Emirates, along comes Six Flags Dubailand. Dubai Holding's Tatweer is forming a strategic alliance with Six Flags (NYSE: SIX) to bring the chain's signature brand of scream-machine thrills to the Arab world, with the first park set to break ground in Dubai next year.

Disney wins on housing issues in Anaheim Council cedes power to decide on projects in the Resort District. After 18 months of often fierce debate and $2-million worth of lobbying, Disney finally got what it wanted -- no new housing in the Anaheim Resort District. Victory came after the City Council agreed Tuesday night to strip itself of its power to decide what can be built in the city's high-powered Resort District. Under the new ordinance, any future decisions -- such as whether to build housing for resort workers -- would have to be approved by a citywide vote, assuming the council approves such a plan in the first place.

New Market to begin collecting taxes from Adventure Park  New Market will now be able to collect taxes from Adventure Park USA, thanks to an agreement that annexes the amusement park into town.

Holy cow, Batman: Great Escape holding its largest job fair  The Great Escape in Queensbury, N.Y., is looking to hire up to 1,500 people to do everything from serve food and operate thrill rides to playing the roles of Batman and Superman this summer. This will be the amusement park's largest annual job fair, officials said.

New slides, new look: Sun Splash opens with Power Surge  FL The Power Surge, a towering tubular attraction in the northeast corner of the park and a twin version of the popular Electric Slide, is the first of four new water slides slated to open at the Cape Coral theme park this year. The Power Surge could be open for wet riders Saturday.

State shuts down Middleton water park  MIDDLETON — The state and town health departments shut down the CoCo Key Water Resort yesterday morning because a test showed one type of chlorine was 20 times higher than state standards allow. Suzanne Condon, director of the state Bureau of Environmental Health, said levels of a chlorine byproduct, called combined chlorine, were far above state limits. That's an indication that too much "free chlorine" had been added to the pool to control contamination, a problem that the state suspected when visitors began reporting chemicals burned them in February, she said.

Scheels store to anchor Schlitterbahn retail portion  Schlitterbahn Vacation Village will announce today that a Scheels All Sports store — complete with a 65-foot Ferris wheel — will anchor its retail component. It is the first retail tenant the $750 million water park resort has announced for its covered river walk area, where shops and restaurants will operate throughout the year in western Kansas City, Kan.

MFS future less certain as Village exits sale  VILLAGE Roadshow has ditched plans to buy the aquarium assets of MFS Living & Leisure, casting more doubt on the survival chances of the stricken fund. Still faced with the daunting task of repaying $180 million of debt by May 30, MFS Living said that it was confident of remaining a going concern despite still failing to find a buyer for any of its assets.

Alabama Aquarium Could Soon Become a Reality  AUBURN, Al. (WTVM)- Soon you may not have to drive three hours to Chattanooga or an hour and a half to Atlanta just to visit an aquarium. Alabama could be getting its own statewide attraction. Beluga whales, penguins and jelly-fish are just a few of the creatures you could be seeing closer to home if the Alabama Aquarium board gets its way. The group wants to build a six million gallon aquarium in Auburn.

Akron Zoo leaps into Year of Frog with new exhibit  WEST AKRON — The Akron Zoo celebrated Leap Year Feb. 29 by opening a new exhibit on a national effort to increase awareness about the plight of amphibians. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has declared 2008 the Year of the Frog and the Akron Zoo is doing its part by putting some of its frogs on display and highlighting the crisis facing the species.

Zoo's wolf game has thousands on prowl  Since the Minnesota Zoo's free educational video game, WolfQuest, launched late last year, it has attracted attention and gamers from across the globe. More than 100,000 people have downloaded WolfQuest and it averages more than 1,000 new users every day, according to figures provided by the zoo.

Mayor Asks For Millions For New Zoo Exhibit  HONOLULU -- Mayor Mufi Hannemann is asking for millions of dollars to finish a new elephant exhibit at the Honolulu Zoo that's been in the works for over a decade. A large portion of the enclosure is finished and sits empty -- waiting for the funding to complete the job. KITV's Keoki Kerr reported that in his budget proposal last week, Hannemann asked for about $7 million to complete an elephant breeding facility here at the zoo.

Status of science museum reported  CA Council members to learn feasibility  Developing a Discovery Center of Science and Technology in Thousand Oaks is viable but will come with a hefty price tag and likely require ongoing city subsidies, according to a report that will be presented to the City Council at its meeting tonight.

Pavilion lot awaits new identity  It used to be the heart of Myrtle Beach, the amusement park and icon that millions of families visited every year, where teenagers cavorted, made money over the summer and danced at the beach. Now, the vacant lot in the photo above that held The Myrtle Beach Pavilion Amusement Park is waiting for a new identity.

Santa Clara sets vote on new stadium for 49ers  SANTA CLARA -- Santa Clara voters will have an opportunity in November to pass judgment on a proposed new stadium for the San Francisco 49ers that would be partly funded by public money. The City Council voted unanimously late Tuesday to put a measure on the Nov. 4 ballot.
