Amusement/Theme Park News Six Flags to cut up to $60M in expenses Dan Snyder's Six Flags amusement park chain, which has lost money in three of the last four quarters, plans to cut expenses by as much as $60 million this year. The company called park attendance over the last two years disappointing. Seven arrested in theme park watery grave tragedy Chennai, Jan. 17 Anusha, a 11-year-old girl drowned in a make-shift lake when a overcrowded boat in which 15 people were having a ride capsized after it was hit by another boat from the rear. While 14 of them were rescued, Anusha was caught under the boat and met with a watery grave. Waterpark News Catch a $25-M wave If city hall could convince someone to build a $25-million, 60,000-sq.-ft. water park in Winnipeg with $7 million of tax dollars and could guarantee access to the public for 25 years -- with no other taxpayer strings attached -- I say go for it. It's a model that may be the wave of the future and could ultimately replace some of our aging, city-owned aquatic facilities. Water park may seek TIF Construction might begin this spring Construction has yet to start, but developers say plans continue to move forward on a commercial development on Sioux Falls' northwestern side. The 80-acre Redstone Village project, near the intersection of Interstates 29 and 90, is to begin with construction of an eight-story hotel, convention center and water park. That $108 million phase is in the financing stage right now and the hope is to create a tax-increment finance district for the development, said Dawn Aspaas, project manager and development director for Splash Resort and Conference Center and Redstone Village. Aquarium/Zoo News Several NYC zoos, aquarium set to get green makeover NEW YORK (AP) _ Saying it needs to live up to its name, the Wildlife Conservation Society is taking steps to make the Central Park and Bronx zoos and its other animal parks more environmentally friendly. Zoo reports record attendance in 2007 The Birmingham Zoo said it set an all-time high attendance record last year, logging in more than half a million visitors. More than 515,000 people visited the zoo last year, compared to 472,500 in 2006. That's more than 11,000 visiting households in 2007, compared to 10,500 in 2006. FEC/LBE/Museum News Plans for Glenwood amusement park still on hold GLENWOOD, IL | For the second straight board meeting, village trustees tabled a recommendation from the Planning/Zoning Board to grant a permit for a proposed an amusement center. Trustee Kerry Durkin asked Tuesday to table the issue -- which would have granted a special use permit to Janice Martin to open the center at 18457 S. Halsted Street -- because the board had not yet received a Police Department report about the business' security plan. Final reality for Sega World THE ghost-town area surrounding the Sega World site in Darling Harbour may be turned into two buildings containing offices, shops and entertainment venues in a $280 million proposal being assessed by NSW Planning. Sega World, which has a distinctive glass cone rising from its second-floor roof, was opened in 1997 and billed as "Australia's interactive Disneyland". But within three years the Japanese gaming company closed its doors after failing to attract enough patrons. Science centre proves top draw with record year The science centre has hit another record year for attendance, with 16 per cent more visitors flocking to the downtown attraction last year compared with 2006. Some 304,000 guests, including more than 54,000 students, visited the Telus World of Science in 2007. Norco OKs deal for equestrian park Norco city officials Wednesday approved a preliminary agreement that would let Belstarr Sports Management LLC create an equestrian facility at Silverlakes. Under the agreement, Belstarr will draw up final plans for horse show grounds, camping areas and soccer fields on the 122-acre city-owned parcel at Hamner Avenue and Citrus Street.
