Brazilian theme park creator Beto Carrero dies  SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - A former country singer who built what is billed as Latin America's biggest theme park died Friday while undergoing heart surgery. Beto Carrero was 70. Carrero, whose given name was Joao Batista Sergio Murad, died of heart problems, Sao Paulo's Sirio Libanes Hospital announced.

Hopes high for park's new coaster  Area's tourism banking on new roller coaster at Michigan's Adventure Michigan's Adventure Amusement Park is advancing its reputation as a quality roller coaster attraction with the construction of Thunderhawk -- Michigan's first "suspended loop" roller coaster.

Pair of albino alligators have new home at Silver Springs  "This is my lucky day," said Joyce Heinemeyer, a first-time visitor to Silver Springs theme park Thursday. She was thrilled to be among the first tourists to view one of the park's two new white alligators up close and personal, she said.

Idlewild Park accepts job applications  Idlewild and the SoakZone amusement park near Ligonier is accepting applications for summer jobs. The park will hire about 700 people. Idlewild and SoakZone amusement park is accepting applications for its 2008 summer season on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

City group headed to Disney World  Just like the standout player in the Super Bowl, a team of government officials is headed to Disney World after Sunday's game. But the visit by the New Orleans contingent will be more about business than photos with Mickey. Holiday World filling 1,700 jobs  Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in Santa Claus, Ind., expects a record number of job applicants for more than 1,700 seasonal jobs at the theme park this year. Jobs range from admissions, food services and lifeguards to merchandise sellers and ride and game operators. First-year employees will earn a base rate of $5.85 to $9.75 an hour.

Theme parks in Cebu  CEBU can maximize its potential as a leisure destination in Asia if it has more entertainment facilities, such as theme parks, a tourism official said. Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 Director Patria Aurora Roa said the presence of family-oriented theme parks, like Hong Kong Disneyland, would entice the market for leisure-seeking tourists.

Knoebel to give speech at his alma mater on park’s success WILLIAMSPORT — Lycoming College graduate Ron Knoebel, co-owner of Knoebels Amusement Resort near Elysburg, will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Barclay Lecture Hall at the Heim Building. His presentation, “Fun, Food and Fantasy: Knoebels Ticket to Success,” is part of the James W. Harding Executive Speakers Series, sponsored by the college’s Institute for Management Studies.

Weeki Wachee Springs Misses Deadline  BROOKSVILLE - Weeki Wachee Springs missed a deadline Friday to submit an amended agreement that would make the troubles with its landlord go away. That could mean the dispute between the attraction and the Southwest Florida Water Management District, which owns the land on which the park sits, could wind up back in court after all, a water district spokesman said Friday.

Great Wolf Investor Nominates Directors  NEW YORK - A shareholder of Great Wolf Resorts Inc. plans to nominate three directors for election to the resort and indoor waterpark operator's board, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Monday.

Splash Planet Success  New Zealand  Long sunny days, a ‘locals’ card offering half-price admission and a better understanding of all Splash Planet has to offer have meant the water theme park has experienced its best season yet. Tens of thousands of guests have visited the Park since the season started on Monday 19 November. On its best day, Thursday 3 January, 2,700 visitors came through the gates.

Water park ahead of schedule  FRENCH LICK — Work on the new hotel and indoor water park in French Lick is progressing ahead of schedule, even as the scope of the project expands. Jerry Fuhs, who with wife Carolyn is developing the property, said Thursday, “Our scheduled opening is fall of ’08. ... It appears right now that the hotel could actually open earlier. The hotel could be open as early as August.”

Aquarium/Zoo News

Experts say S.F. Zoo exhibits outdated  The San Francisco Zoo is a sad and outdated place, with exhibits reminiscent of what might be found in the Third World or Eastern Europe. That's the assessment of three international zoo experts, who visited the zoo this week at the urging of the advocacy organization In Defense of Animals. On Friday, the group called for hearings by the Board of Supervisors on the zoo's "inhumane conditions" and lobbied for transformation of the zoo into an animal-rescue center.

Zoo gets help from its friends  Things haven’t been going well lately at the Lake Superior Zoo. In September 2006, the zoo lost its accreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, a blow to its standing and ability to purchase animals from members in the association.

Zoo Plans $3.5 Million Tiger Exhibit  SANFORD, Fla. -- The Central Florida Zoo is about to announce plans for a new multimillion-dollar exhibit, WESH 2 News has learned. The plan is for a Sumatran tiger exhibit, complete with water features, a raised walkway and glassed-in viewing station.

S.Africa's Gold Reef says buy-out deal fails  JOHANNESBURG, Feb 4 (Reuters) - South African casino operator Gold Reef Resorts (GDFJ.J: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Monday it had failed to win approval from gambling authorities for a proposed private equity buy-out by Friday's deadline, ending the 9.85 billion rand ($1.32 billion) deal.
