During the 1999 operating season the leisure industry was reminded how absolutely necessary it is to have a plan ready, “In the Can” to work with media in the event of some type of business issue which needs immediate attention.
1999 was a true anomaly for the
leisure industry as it relates to safety incidents. The incidents that
occurred were not tied together in any form or manner – different equipment,
different manufacturers, different operators and different geographic
regions.
First and foremost be truthful with
the media. Make sure that you communicate in on honest, frank and firm
manner with them. If you do not know the answer to their inquiry, tell
them you do not have all the facts and that you will be back with them as
soon as you have the information. It is important to be responsive.
In the next several issues of
InterPark, I will be providing you information which you will find helpful
in working with media.
